MM Smith Storage Warehouse, Inc. was founded in 1934 by Mr. M. M. Smith Sr. at the original location of 325 Hay St. At the time of its origination, Mr. Smith was in the retail furniture business. The third floor of the building was used to store new furniture that had not yet been put on display. At the request of several friends who needed a place to leave their belongings while they were absent from the area, he agreed to keep their belongings. Word soon spread that Mr. Smith had a place for storage. Soon after, Mr. Smith bought his first warehouse in 1938. In 1954, Mr. Smith closed his furniture business and concentrated on his moving and storage business. After 71 years in the moving and storage business, the household goods division was sold in March 2005.

In 1963, Matthew M. Smith Jr. joined the business on a full time basis after working with his father since the age of 10. Under Matthew's guidance the business has continued to grow and expand as additional needs for the area emerged. MM Smith Storage opened it’s Commercial Merchandise Div. for the storage and distribution of general commodities. Their shipping efforts now span the globe. The Commercial Merchandise Division provides general commodity storage and distribution of raw materials, semi manufactured products and finished goods for suppliers, manufacturers and retail facilities. The Company operates approximately 75,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space, providing services to Eastern North Carolina. The Company also operates a fleet of trucks and trailers for the delivery of stored goods, U.S. Mail and provides TOFC (piggyback) service to the rail heads in Charlotte and Greensboro.

The company owns and maintains a total of 28 vans, trucks, tractors and trailers in its fleet. With its own truck maintenance facilities which include a 3 bay shop, environmentally friendly wash facilities and a fully equipped shop truck, we are ready to deliver on a moments notice. The shop is heated by an EPA approved waste oil heater which uses oil from the trucks as fuel. Internal personnel provide all of the necessary support functions including major engine overhaul.

Currently, the company employs approximately 25 people. M.M. Smith, Jr. is President and CEO. Grady W. Hales is Manager of the Commercial Merchandise Division. According to Mr. Smith, Jr., the unusual request or requirement is the norm, the impossible takes a little longer.
